Unistellar Joins Call for a New Astronomy

San Francisco and Marseilles, March 13: Unistellar, maker of eVscopes, the world’s most powerful and easy-to-use consumer telescopes, is proud to endorse the Call for a New Astronomy presented today at the SXSW Space Rush Summit.

“Unistellar is excited to join a band of experts, amateurs, and organizations like the SETI Institute and Space2Inspire in this call to convene a worldwide conference committed to bringing astronomy to a larger community,” said Unistellar co-founder and CEO Laurent Marfisi. “We will work together to create a worldwide collaboration that’s as large, inclusive, and open as possible, and committed to advancing scientific research and scientific literacy.”

Marfisi pointed to several examples of how such collaborations work. Unistellar’s network of citizen scientists helped chart the path that will take NASA’s Lucy mission to its target, the Trojan asteroids. Citizen scientists at Planet Hunters have performed more than twelve million exoplanet detections. And the people behind Globe at Night have made 200,000 measurements of night-sky brightness from 180 countries worldwide.

The conference summoned in the Call will develop and launch a broad range of new initiatives that encourage research, collaboration, and dialogue among experts, amateurs, and even novices. “This will do far more than expand our knowledge in astronomy, or promote scientific literacy,” Marfisi explained. “It will foster mutual understanding and trust between scientists and each of us non-experts, and encourage us to work together on the biggest challenge we must overcome to protect our Earth: creating extremely wide, globally scaled cooperation among humans.”
